ftcwgThe Position Paper "For inclusive business models, well designed laws and fair(er) trade options for small-scale traditional cannabis farmers” produced by The Fair(er) Trade Cannabis Working Group aims to contribute to the debate on finding sustainable and realistic solutions to the challenges posed by the developing cannabis industry, with a special focus on traditional and small scale farmers.

The Fair(er) Trade Cannabis Working Group arose from the Fair(er) Trade for Small Traditional Farmers workshop, which was held in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines from 7th to 11th November 2019, organised by the Transnational Institute (TNI) in collaboration with the Government of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines (GoSVG) and the Saint Vincent and the Grenadines Cannabis Revival Committee (SVGCRC), inspired by the chain of events taking place in the country on the development of an inclusive medical cannabis market, and following up on the report and recommendations of the CARICOM Regional Commission report on Marijuana of 2018.

It was agreed that the reasoning, conversations and discussions at the workshop should continue, documenting the key points, concerns and observations as well making representation to CARICOM regarding the inadequacies of the current legal and regulatory framework in the region, particularly in relation to the political decision to place traditional cannabis farmers first in line to benefit from the emergence of licit spaces in the global market.

The Position Paper emanating from that discussion has been sent to CARICOM member states, to request continued and bolder reforms inclusive of traditional small cannabis farmers.
